Malcolm and Elinor
Feliz Navidad and feliz Anno Neuvo to you all,
In a moment of weakness a few days ago I said that when we got back to Quito and before the year end I would do a blog entry. Unfortunately Elinor remembered me saying it ,so here I am doing my blog entry.
As you all know ( if you have been paying attention to what Elinor has been writing, and there will be a written test at the end of the trip so you had better pay attention( Aahhh major panic ,everything just went into itallics don't know why was just trying to find a left facing bracket thingy and pressed something which made that happen. Never mind, continue on as if nothing has happened, but don't expect any left facing bracket thingy's.( we have so far spent all the time in Mindo but that all changes now. From now on we move around a lot more frequently with a maximum of four days in each place. The time in Mindo was good for the most part. the weather was reliable. It was dry and clear most mornings, but by 1.00 to 2.00pm the clouds would roll in and we would then get either rain, fog or a combination of the two for the rest of the afternoon and sometimes into the night. We stayed in a total of four places three in or around town and one, a jungle lodge about 25 minutes from town. The best place was Mindo Real a small hostal about seven minutes walk from town. We had our own modern cabin about 50 metres from the main building overlooking the river. We were served a massive breakfast each morning (best time we have discovered( and the owners would drive us into town each night when we went for supper. One morning we asked the title of a peice of music that was playing while we ate breakfast, the owners told us the name, and later in the afternoon they gave us a CD of music they copied for us. The place also had a really nice swimming pool. All of the above cost us a total of $40.00 a night for the two of us. The worst place was the jungle lodge which was way more expensive although it did include all meals. The place was run down and had a musty, damp feel about it. The owners were absentee and the only staff were a young Ecuadorian couple and their little baby. On the first day I was trying to have a shower, I let the hot water tap run for about five minutes, the sickly trickle of water showed no signs of getting warm. I then tried the other tap as they sometimes mix up the hot and cold taps, but that did not seemed to work either. I went back to the first one and tried again, as it was really just a sickly trickle I tried to crank the tap a little further open...... the tap came off in my hand a powerful jet of what quickly became scolding hot water squirted horizontally across the shower stall It took me a good while to get the tap back onto the thread, its such fun trying to stop an insistent jet of water, but at least it was now warm. Thats probably been the most notable problem so far a couple of other minbor ones which if I am conned into doing another blog entry I will relate later unless new "better" ones happen in between. We are writing this from the South American Explorers club in Quito which close in 5 minutes, so I have to end this now (thats true, honest( We are off to the 14500 ft level of a volcano tomorrow so we have to take our warm woollys with us. Anyway bye for now, look forward to hearing any news from home wherever it might be. Please use our usual e mail address or the message board on this site. Malcolm and Elinor- comments
