Hi everyone,
Well this is our last blog entry on the spanish inquisition revival tour.
It´s now 9.30 am here in Vilcabamba. At 12.00 noon we start the journey home which should last about 31 hours before we get home.
Since our last blog we spent 3 days in a birding lodge near Zamora. The place is owned by a Belgian couple who came to Ecuador 11 years ago. Really nice people and great birding withhummingbird and Tanager feeders located right outside the dining room providing great close up views of some of the more colourful birds in the area.
Our ¨rustic¨cabin was located quite a ways up the steep hill with great views of the forested mountain valley side across from us.The shower and toilet were outside the room on the covered balcony it was weird wandering about naked to the shower each morning and getting dried looking out at the forest but it was really quite a nice experience. We had a mosquito net in the room but we werent bothered by mosquitos. We did have a firefly in our room one night but that was kind of a special treat.
We have since moved onto Vilcabamba (the picture above is actually of the town) The area around here is known as the ¨valley of eternal youth¨as therer were reported to be more people here over 100 years old than anywhere else in the world. That claim has come into question as many of the native folk don´t really know when they were born. (we are getting younger by the day, if only mentally). The area has attracted lots of gringos who are moving here to enjoy the year round spring like climate, laid back life style and cheap cost of living. It´s a bit to much old hippy/new age like for us. We have done some nice hiking and have kind of rested up a bit.
We have had a great trip, made all the better by the many really nice people we have met. We feel really fortunate in that way, and we hope to keep in touch with you all.
Any way will end now, go back to our hotel and finish packing.
Bye for now Malcolm and Elinor

allen booth lowell not remembering if is supposed to pick you up shows that no matter how many new places you go to or how many new people you meet, some things never change! You have had a great trip, thanks for sharing it with us...safe travels home. Allen
Gaby & Adrian Sounds like you two had a fabulous birding holiday. The people you meet when travelling can really make a trip so much more than you would ever expect. Glad that you met so many nice people. Have a safe trip home.
