Decided to write my blog on paper & to type it up once I get time on the lappy!
The last time I blogged I was in San Cristobal. In San Cristobal we looked at different artists & artisans as part of our work for DreamAid. We travelled to San Juan Chamula on an afternoon with Lucilla our translator, this town was extremely poor & consisted of a market and a Church. We went into the Church but unfortunately weren't allowed to take pictures (they thought it took their soul away :S) which was a shame as it was very interesting inside. It was a traditional Mayan Church and had hundreds & hundreds of candles burning inside, different candles burning meant different things. But the part I found most odd was the sacrificial turkeys! The religious women leaders would use a turkey to rid someone of their sins and then there & then kill the turkey! When me and Tom first saw this we really had to stop ourselves from giggling. They wouldn't even eat the turkey afterwards as they thought the turkey was then sinful. I found this strange as they were obviously poor and in need of food. But each to their own! After a few days in San Cristobal Dad left for meetings about DreamAid in Monterrey so Tom and I were by ourselves for one night. We spent the day wandering around the town and decided we wanted an ice-cream and they were 9p each!! What a bargain. At one point we wandered past the theatre which was advertising a performance set hundreds of years ago in Mayan towns, so we decided to go! Got posh seats for £10 each. For the rest of the day we lazed at the hotel and Tom did some packing as we were leaving the following morning. We had tea and a few voddys / beers then hit the theatre! It was a bit odd and not in English but I think I caught the drift of the story & it was interesting to see a Mexican play. On our way back to the hotel we went through the main square where a big market was taking place. THere were some teenagers busking for money by playing with fire, it was really cool! The Police came at one point to try and move them but the crowd started chanting and the Police dissappeared! We bought some 'sick hats' (these really cool woolly hats, as it got realllly cold at night time there), stopped by a Lebanese restaurant for a bevvy & a shisha then went to bed. Oh and we had our picture taken outside 'Fannys' on our way back, much to our amusement ahahah. We had to be up at 5am to get to the airport so that wasn't nice and I still was full of cold! So we got the flight to Mexico City then another one to Merida where we would meet Dad the following morning.
Merida was really nice, very warm though! Whilst we were there we did work for DreamAid, visited Chitzen Itza one of the wonders of the world (where it absolutely poured and we were wet through!) and 1 day we went to find a cenote (natural pool) but managed to find the most mingingest in Mexico and managed to find our way to an awfucl tacky resort which reminded me of Cleethorpes on a bad day! I didn't know such awful places exsisted in Mexico! But I suppose the chavs of Mexico need to be entertained too.. Anyway it was eventful. Oh and whilst in Merida Dad also managed to loose his Visa card!
After Merida it was back to Mexico City for meetings for Dad and the DreamAid press release. The first full day TOm came down with a stomach bug which luckily for him only lasted 24 hours, I started with it on the Wednesday and still have it now :(! Haven't eaten since Wednesday either. Mexico City was generally just DreamAid work, the press release went really well and we managed to get DreamAid on TV and in several newspapers which is really positive. Although the last couple of days I didn't leave the hotel room and was stuck with awsful TV to watch! On the plane to Miami now then onwards to Rio where hopefully I'll develop some sort of tan!
Much love
