Malibu is a nice place! I thought it was going to be a flashy retreat for the rich of LA but that's not entirely the case. Don't get me wrong the place is full of incredible houses with 3-car-garages and sometimes a personal lift to their own little beach, but the whole thing is quite tasteful.
The beach where we spent the afternoon was in a quite wild rocky cove. The water was as clear as it was cold but quite a few people in a wetsuit were fishing with fishing rifles and harpoons.
A local told us how the fog that we will see when traveling north prevented explorer's ships to ever spot the San Francisco bay. It was only discovered when travellers walked by it.
The next day we drove through the Big Sur park by the coastline, which was simply stunning! That whole region is really impressive and really makes you realise how much the California state has to offer. We even managed to find a really scenic dirt track trough the hills overlooking the ocean! It was a lot of fun to drive our ford escape under massive tree roots and up the steep climbs on the hills. We constantly dove in and out of the fog, which turned the hot sunny hills to cold and wet with hardly any visibility!
We reached our destination of Monterey at night in the fog. The fog also accompanied us on our wale watching boat trip the next morning where with great disappointment we saw no whales whatsoever!
Disappointed with not being able to see ANYTHING in Monterey we decided to make up for it with some tacos in Santa Cruz! Taco Moreno has the best tacos I have ever had!!
Santa Cruz was a whole different scene...no fog!
We hit one of the many beaches which showcase some impressive waves and quite often some impressive surfing too. There we made some new, interesting friends. We met two couples from San Jose, which were downing litres of vodka inside a little tent they had set up on the beach! They based their knowledge of the world on "Jersey Shore" and when they realised that I am from Rome while Benni is from "Italy" they asked us how we cope with the language barrier! Hanging out with these guys was entertaining to say the least, with the height of the afternoon being them almost drowning in the currents of a shallow stream while on a quest to score a cigarette!
The day went on pretty fast between and game of paddleball and a ride on the jersey-shore-boys' bodyboard. Once the beach got cold we set off to our next destination: San Francisco!
After a few days of enjoying beaches and parks we were ready to hit the city again, and the thought of cool San Francisco made us forget how we got tired of the big city in LA!
