We woke up late. Hallelujah. First time in a very long time. I explained to Edd that even when you're working you can have a lie in on a Saturday; this travelling wasn't allowing me to have a Saturday lie in and it was a problem in my life.
There was no electricity as a storm had come through the night before and knocked it out, which meant no internet either. Edd got up to see if they were still serving coffee - by cooking water over a central fire - but he came back empty handed.
We got up an hour later and decided to do a whole lot of nothing for the day (it was a difficult decision) and set up on sun loungers. I got up to go to the bathroom a little while later and noticed people drinking out of coffee cups when I enquired as to what they were drinking, I was told it was 'just hot water' I then asked how this hot water happened into existence and the main guy there went in search of the answer.. He came back with a pot of freshly brewed filter coffee and I was surprised that it had magically appeared into existance. Funny what a bit of effort can muster.
We then had some breakfast with the Swiss girl and resumed positions. We laid there for a few hours and then decided it was too hot, so moved over to the lounger chairs under umbrellas and I sat and blogged for a while, Edd read the news on his phone. (The internet was back up and running).
We were running out of supplies and couldn't find the items we normally used in any of the stores in Asia. We'd asked Edd's friend that was joining us in 2 weeks if he'd mind bringing some stuff out for us, and then I had the bright idea to order it online and have it delivered to his house. So we sat on the Boots website and ordered our supplies, genius.
We'd decided to stay a few more nights, but not in the same accommodation, so we went for a walk down the beach to see what else was available. One place was $10, but was basically like a love shack. Round room, round bed, red sheets, only enough space to crab walk around to my side of the bed. It was entertaining to see, but we decided the red light district was not what we had in mind.
The next place was $20, although it was lovely, it was out of our budget. The last place that offered accommodation was right at the end of the beach. It was owned and run by a large number of westerners as well as having local staff. I negotiated a rate within our budget (the condition was we had to stay for 3 nights) and we paid a deposit. We had intended on having lunch somewhere with the money we'd just paid them, so had nothing left for food and had to go back to our original accommodation instead.
The heavens had opened in the meantime and we walked back in torrential rain. I was wearing my beach shawl over my costume and Edd was wearing his swimming trunks, so we didn't mind. We dumped our stuff with the Swiss girl and went for a swim in the storm; the water was warmer than the temperature outside which felt very strange. We swam for a while and then had to get out as we were starving.
The Swiss girl had ordered a veggie green curry and had only eaten half, so I obliged with the other half. Edd ordered a pizza and I had a slice of that as well, I felt like a real little gannet hoovering up everyone else's scraps!
Edd and I then decided to introduce the Swiss girl to Mexican Trains. She picked it up really quickly and we spent the next 5 hours playing all 13 rounds! We were playing on a glass table and I had the bright idea of finding the double 10 by looking for it underneath the table. I found it and reached over the top of the table to get it, knocking over half a glass of red wine in the process. The game is the travel version, so the dominos are actually cards. The Swiss girls hat and book also got caught in the cross fire as well. Moron alert. We cleaned up the cards as best we could and I went to try and salvage the hat as best as possible, coming back a while later announcing that the red wine had in fact gone green and I was leaving it to soak overnight. We knew that white wine helped get rid of red wine stains, but I'd already messed half a glass of red wine everywhere, we didn't want to use a glass of white wine to try and correct the issue. We didn't see the point in throwing good money after bad and gave the Swiss girl some money to replace her had instead. No use wasting another glass of wine.
Edd got chatting to one of the local girls, who was selling the usual bracelets and other such items. She asked him where he was from and replied in a Scottish accent saying she was from Glasgow, Scotland. We all hosed ourselves at her sharp wit. He asked her what she did with the money that she made and she explained that it was put towards her fees for the English school. He was immediately impressed and bought me an ankle bracelet; the Swiss girl also bought a bracelet from her and she went on her way.
We paused for dinner during round 8 and then resumed shortly afterwards. In the end Edd won, the Swiss girl came second and I was last... Having the worst round in my Mexican Train history. It was after 10pm and we all went to bed, exhausted from a day of doing nothing.
