We did a drive from Port Lincoln called Whalers Way which had some really spectacular coastal scenery like this one which is called Theakstones crevasse. The scenery is dramatic, wind blown and scary....the waves thunder in and it was, for this area, a relatively calm day. Coffin Bay is named for Sir Isaac Coffin, a friend of Matthew Flinders - we seem to have been following Matthew Flinders for some time now and have got quite fond of him! Coffin Bay is a lovely place - a small peaceful town where we had a lovely dinner in the local pub. It is well known for its oysters and I can attest that they are lovely. Eucla Telegraph station was fascinating as it has been reclaimed by the dunes as you can see in this photo. We did learn at the museum at the Eyre Bird Observatory though that at the height of its operation there were 2 rooms of operators - one for WA and one for SA as the lines were not joined together. From Cape Le Grand we drove a 4wd track called the Balladonia track which was narrow and a bit sanday but saved a few hundred kms and was quite an interesting drive. We also took most of the detours off the Eyre Highway to look at the coast and took 3 days to cross over to the Eyre Peninsular in SA.
