Eucla Telegraph station was fascinating as it has been reclaimed by the dunes as you can see in this photo. We did learn at the museum at the Eyre Bird Observatory though that at the height of its operation there were 2 rooms of operators - one for WA and one for SA as the lines were not joined together. So there was a runner between the rooms who would pass the message received by one state to the other room to be forwarded by the next state - crazy!! Each room had 8 operators and they didn't wear headphones - just had to concentrate on their own series of dots and dashes that were coming in. It sounds like a pretty hard job and there isn't much at Eucla and would have been even less then!
