We drove back to Sydney via Broken Hill as Cath had always wanted to come here due to the fact that in the 1950s for a short time her Dad was a flying doctor here. We did in fact have a very interesting visit at the RFDS, but there are no archives or records to look up his tenure here. However you may not know that your $A20 is dedicated to the RFDS. Take one out and have a look at it - it has a picture of the first RFDS plane (which was actually a Qantas plane); a picture of Rev John Flynn - the man who started it all; a body chart - a torso with letters or numbers so that a patient can describe pain in quadrants to a doctor over the radio; and I think a pedal radio....a lot of Australian history all our the $20 note. The RFDS still used the medical box with numbered medicines, syringes, gauzes etc and they are held in over 4000 locations throughout remote and regional Australia, including many roadhouses who are often called upon by travellers in distress. The box was as described by dad - though of course with different and more modern contents today.
We also visited a fabulous 50s milk bar which had lovely milkshakes and went to the Living Sculpture park just out of town which was lovely for sunset. Pro Hart's gallery was interesting as his personal art collection has many other artists represented, as well as some of his own works, including the painted rolls royce! Broken Hill was a really interesting town with a lot to see and do and in 2 days we rushed quite a bit and will have to return for a more considered visit.
