I'm in the land of the '84 olympics, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the 93-95 war. Cheery.
I got the train up from Mostar yesterday, there was only one platform and the train was late. Everyone's been so nice to me here. A wee old lady in my carriage (and I know, no sweets from strangers!) gave me a wee bounty bar. The trams here are ancient, it looks pretty ex-communist here. I found my hostel, with the help of a German woman, and a group of Swedish tourists who gave me their map!
Sarajevo is East meets West. Mosques, Synagogues, Orthodox churches and Catholic churches. Traditional Bosnian coffee has gritty sludge at the bottom of it and is eaten with Turkish delight (the redeeming factor!) My hostel guy in Mostar sweetly gave me an umbrella for Sarajevo (very much needed!) So I explored the old town and checked out the bridge where old Franzy was shot.
At the hostel I played cards with some Croatians. Oh yeh- everyone chain smokes here, in cafes, trains, hostels! And we went out for a lovely dinner. Today I went on a tour to the tunnel museum, or tunnel of life, that connected surrounded Sarajevo during the war with the rest of Bosnia, pretty insane. The woman running the hostel was keen to see my pictures, she was 15 when she went through the tunnel to get food for her family and hasn't seen it since.
Restaurant food here is surprisingly cheap. I ate out for lunch, a whole pizza cost €1.20. But I found a vegi restaurant so may stray away from cheese for tea! Today is the celebration of Tito's birthday, not sure if I agree with it, but there will be fireworks!

Louise I'm sorry to hear that you've started smoking! But glad you're having a good time. Oh, and it's bloody hot and sunny here btw! Sorry about that too. xxx
