Messner On Tour
Namaste there,
Here I am in ol' Kathmandu, which at first sight appears to be the holy dream - food abound that actually tastes nice, cue Whittaker eating like a starved Yak.
It's been a busy old couple of weeks in Tibet, with a lifetimes ambition completed - seeing Mt. Everest. After getting round Tibet in any way possible (no mincing land cruisers for the rag tag) we finally arrived at Everest Base camp after trekking in 40 miles to get there (including making an emergency camp after getting lost in a snow blizzard - temp of -15 degrees according to the watch). Good news when we got there as well - the bloke who stops you going past base camp had gone home to Lhasa as it was too bloody cold. This gave the rag tag invitation to cut their teeth on the worlds highest mountain......
Step 1 - Hire a guide for 20 pounds who is 15 years old and makes you look silly in all your gear, as he is wearing Hi-Tec trainers and a parka
Step 2 - Mince off on a trek to camp III recommended to take a minimum of 6 days, using a professional company with at least one guide per 2 people, cooks, tents, porters and yaks. We have Magi noodles and bravado.
Step 3 - have the hairy dream at Camp III, 6400 metres high (or if you work in imperial measurements 21,000 feet or 13 leagues, 12 fathoms, a guinea, ha'penny, outside loo, tin bath in front of the fire, all I got for Christmas was a walnut and a smack - and I was thankful, you don't know you were born......). You are close to the top it is unreal.
Step 4 - After one miserable night at 5800 metres in camp 1.5 decide minus 20 degrees is no fun and do the trek in 2 days, coming home in the dark
Step 5 - Crow on about it
Step 6 - Just find out all the pics you took of the event (about 100) don't record when you have forgotten to put your memory card back in your camera (the pics on the net are Richard's). BELM!
It is definitely the best thing I have ever done! Tibet is the dream, gotta be one of the most amazing places on Earth - up there with Blackpool I reckon.
So back down to Earth and after an amazing journey to Nepal through some of the best scenery I've ever seen, I'm here in Nepal. This journey was spent in the company of a Czech bloke of 54 years old called Jan. He was a lovely hatter who had no visa, claims he hadn't eaten for 8 days and liked passing borders in unofficial places with 10 year old boys?! Wide berth.
Looking forward to banter in Nepal and currently eyeing up a rafting trip. The only one offered so far is a 3 day trip that used to be 4 days - but someone built a dam half way down..... The search continues.....
Over and out
