hi everyone , we have arrived in scotland, after a fantastic time in norway. we took a ferry trip from bergen to scrabster up the very north of scotland. the bunk room was a squash, but fortunately, we had the whole room to ourselves, not the nine intended! the trip was very calm, and we arrived in thick fog, so scrabster was just a blur of houses. even so, we did get the idea that it was a very exposed place, and isolated. the villages were tiny. tim spotted lots of rabbits. The night before we had camped just out of Bergen, in two tents, and it was very light until 11, and then never really got that dark, so the kids were quite tired. However it was dry, and almost too hot at 9am in the morning. the weather in norway, we are staying on an organic sheep farm, just out of Forfar, about two hours drive north of Edinburgh. They are friends of my family; a retired couple, and live in a four storied block house, with lots of space, so we have lots of space too. Isabel has her own double-bed to sleep in ! We say she is the princess of the house. For two days we loafed around here a bit, took a walk across the hills and up into the heather; it was quite warm for scotland. They have several old ruined crofters houses on their property,so it was interesting to hear how the subsistence farmers used to live. The houses have fallen into ruin because the slate off the roofs to be sold for a high price. They are now beyond restoration. Our hosts have been fabulous and we have been thoroughly spoilt. But yesterday we finally ventured out on our own, and went and saw an old flour mill, still able to work. The kids got a hands on account of how flour was made and saw all the different types of cereals. The guide was very informative and had his own opinion on how the world was going ! We saw the water wheel, the grinding stones, and the pulley that took up the bags of flour to the two floors. And watched to see how long it took the flour mill to stop once he stopped the water. If you got stuck or attached to something, you would have to wait a minute and half for the stones to stop working!
