hi we are in the netherlands now. it is very busy here, lots of traffic. the houses are smaller in the villages and towns, a bit bigger in the country. we have passed old windmills and new ones, there is lots of water here, all the land is below sea level, so just about everyhouse is right next to a canal. the house we are staying in is three stories high, but in a line of six and about 20m sq. we are staying with friends i met 20 yrs ago while travelling, it is fun to catch up again
the village is bergambacht, about 10k south of gouda. yesterday we braved the traffic and went over to Zealanade, we got side-tracked on the way and visited a national park and ended up canoeing around this waterway which looked like a bunch of weeds to us, but was infact native to the area for 400 yrs! it was mainly willow.
the canoeing was ok, the kids enjoyed it, i took awhile to get used to steering - we had to take two canoes and i had never done the back bit before! so that was interesting! After two hours i finally managed to get the boat to steer straight!
then we set off to Zealande and hit a major traffic jam, and were in the wrong lanes, fortunately i managed to attract the attention of a truck driver and he let us out into lanes (we had to go three across) to get to another expressway! that was exciting! poor stu is quite exhausted with all the concentrating from driving. we saw a bit of zealande, but didn't get to the big dams - there was just too many miles, and too much traffic.
that's all for now.
