As you may or may not have seen, Anita and I hired a Kermit green Mustang to take us to Vegas. The whole car hire process is a bit different over here. In our reservation we selected a convertible or similar, but when we got there to pick it up, they just told us to go to where the convertibles are parked and pick one we liked. Hence the over the top colour. Our drive took us up past LA then west towards Nevada. Once we were outside the city limits, the traffic cleared up and the drive was really good. It also helped that the weather was perfect and the scenery was incredible.
Sav and Georgia were in a Dodge sedan and we chased each other and did some Topgear style shots with the go-pro.
Our first stop on the drive was the Route 66 museum. As most of Route 66 has been bypassed with a freeway, you have to divert a little and go exploring. The museum was small but full of memorabilia and being a super hot day, a route 66 root beer went down perfectly.
We continued to explore the town around the museum and found a 50's diner with bottomless coffee, so we had a dirty greasy lunch there.
After lunch we drove a further 50km's along route 66 stopping a points of interest to take some pics and do a photo shoot with us and the cars. Then it was time to hit the freeway again and open up the mustang. I could tell you what speed I was averaging, but here in the US I can plead the 5th amendment.
It took us another 2hrs to get to Vegas and the drive is one of the best things I've ever done. I really recommend hiring a sports car in America and doing a bit of a drive. Rolling into Vegas with the top down and setting sun - that's a memory you want to have.
