First week in DenmarkThere have been a few cool things this week. I met Sara's brother, Nicolai. Sara and I caught a bus into the city at 930pm to catch up with him at a Cafe. The name of the cafe is translated to 'Tasteless Cafe'. I think it's named that because the decorations are just put up on the wall without any thought... but the walls were covered in xmas decorations, so I didn't really notice how tasteless it really was. I also tried a drink there, unsure of the name of it, but it was pretty nice. It was a cordial that tasted a little bit like Lychee. I didn't mind it. After we sat and talked for a while, Nicolai drove us home. I laid down in the boot; feeling somewhat back in Australia for a moment, before realising it was around -2C.
On tues we borrowed the family car and Sara drove us across the main land to the west side. We were in a city called Esbjerg and visiting Sara's best friend, Anne-Marie. We got up at 7am and had breaky before heading on the trip there. (about 2hrs) It was pretty cool scenery. It was still -1C and there was frost on the fields as we drove. We also passed a truck spraying salt onto the roads to melt the ice. We did arrive a little bit early and had to hang around the shops and read in the cark at Anne-Marie's uni car park.
Once we picked up the keys we went to her apartment and cooked some bread rolls, for lunch when Anne-Marie finished uni at 2pm. She's pretty cool and we all sat around and talked for ages. Later that afternoon she took us to the beach, where there a 4 HUGE statues of ppl sitting looking out to sea. We went home, had dinner and after I found out champions league was on, they suggested we go to a bar and watch it... I couldn't say no. My first chance to watch a champions league game at a normal time (compared to 3am like back at home). Boring game, and not many ppl there... prob because it was a Tues evening. But had fun anyways.Wed we just hung out at Anne-Marie's apartment. I fell back asleep after breaky. I think jetlag finally hit me. We hung around til about 4pm, when we headed back to Århus. The trip home was foggy, but you could still see about 10m in front of you, so it was all good. Sara is still driving all the time. When I'm at an int, I still get a little confused, and don't feel confident driving yet. But it's slowly getting better.Thurs Sara and I caught the bus from hers to the city. It's very different to Perth city, more like Freo, but cooler. We had a look around, posted some info to Em and bought the 3rd Harry potter book for me. (I have no Xbox or foxtel... its keeping me busy reading. But they are not bad books...) In the evening I met another of Sara's friends Line. We caught a train with her to a school she's going to in Ry. Hard to explain what type of school it is, as I'm still trying to get it. But we were invited there by Line to have apple slice (these puff pastry balls that have no apple in it) and make Christmas decorations with the other students. It was like art and craft class in primary school. Loads of fun. They were so shocked how little I knew about making Christmas hearts and stars with paper that they hang on the Christmas tree. It was heaps of fun. We left just before 10pm to catch the train back to Århus.Today has been quiet. The only interesting thing so far, is that we went to a deer park and fed deer carrots. I freaked out a little when Sara told me that this is the mating session and the males can be quite aggressive. When we tried to feed them, there wasn't much movement, until we threw food towards on of the males. Once he got up, a lot of others started running over. It was really cool. Tonight, I'm waiting for Sara to come home, have dinner with her dad and I. Then we are going out in the city. Hopefully go to Loco bar, which Jamie R keeps talking about, and keeps saying I need to go to.
A few comparisons. So much is different here, there's always something to learn or that surprises me:- The first thing I noticed in Denmark is the traffic lights. Other then being a mirror image of those in Australia, the traffic lights turn orange again before turning green. - Options for your toast bread are slightly different. Besides not having vegemite, they have liver pâté, which they heat up to put on bread. They also have something sooo much better then nutella! They have thin sheets of chocolate that melt on toast. It's so good!!-Christmas is celebrated so much more here. They have Xmas calendars... and for each of the 25 days of Christmas, they get to open one present. They also make some of their own decorations. I'm so glad I came for Xmas. Such a different experience.… comparisons to be continued in future blogs.
