Less than a week left now. I have given or thrown away most of my things now. It's a bit of a shame that I bought all that junk in the first place. Surely Ill know better next time. I'm having a goodbye party saturday. And then I'm off with everything I own fitted into a small backpack, scot-free.
After the first boring 12 hours flight, I'll be arriving in Hong Kong. I think ill stay at this place called the Chungking Mansions; it's a notorious maze of about a hundred low-end budget hostels in one and the same building. By the sounds of it its a dump, but the quicker I get used to living on the cheap the better. I'll probably spend about a week in Hong Kong as it takes a couple of days to get a Chinese visa. That should be enough time to get rid of any yet lag and see the sights. It will probably be somewhat of a culture shock given I have never been outside Europe before. Especially the Asian styled hole-in-the-floor toilets scary me, I don't know how Ill get used to them. Something worth writing home about :).
I have pretty much given up on my earlier optimistic plan to travel across the breadth of China to India across Tibet and Nepal. That kind of journey would involve allot of time in a wintery China. It would be expensive, cold and time consuming. I think heading south instead from China, island hopping towards Australia is a more fun journey. In comparison to China, Indonesia is cheap, sunny and more compact. I'll probably have enough time to do a little detour to the Philippines on the way. Once in Australia I could take one of those bus journeys from the northern most part to the southern most (Darwin-Melbourne). That would give me the following route: Hong Kong->China->Vietnam->Cambodia->Thailand->Malaysia->Indonesia->Philippines->Indonesia->East Timor->Australia. This might still be a bit overly optimistic when it comes to time, as I just have about 7-8 months to get it all done.
Well I'll let you know how it turns out. Cheers
