It's T minus about a month. I'm getting ready to leave my safe and comfortable life here in Birmingham and get this adventure on the road. Although it will be hard for me to leave everyone behind, it's time for a change. Before I leave I have lots of stuff to get rid of, mostly clothes. I think I'll give them away to one of those Red Cross shops. I'll be all "where I'm going I wont be needing clothes". Maybe I'll keep my Borat styled swimsuit and my oversized diving goggles.
As for the actual trip, I got a return ticket to Hong Kong over seven months. I'd like to avoid flying and go overland as much as possible. Flying is for cheaters, and this way I'll get off the beaten track. My plan so far is to start off in China (Hong Kong) then do the South East Asian tour (Vietnam->Cambodia->Thailand->Laos), then head back into China thru the Himalayas (Tibet->Nepal) to get into India, and finally backtrack to Hong Kong thru the Himalayas and China again.
Although I'd like to avoid doing the long India-Himalaya-South East China rout twice, there does not seem to be another way to get across, as there is no legal land route thru Burma and there does not seem to be any freighter ships routs across the Bay of Bengal either.
If after all this I still have some time and money, I'll fly off (yes, selling out) to Australia. Once there I might as well try and get myself a job. If the job hunting there does not work out I'll have to get back to England to find a job. My best bet then would probably be London, but maybe I'll be missing Birmingham by then and come crawling back.
Well, that's the plan so far. The route thru Himalayas will probably be the hardest part, I don't even know if there is any buss route thru there or if I'll have to hitchhike with truck drivers. Imagine that, sitting on the back of pickup truck full of chickens. Anyways, I might write some more once I get going.
Cheers.
