Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) to Darsheeva (Turkmenistan)
This is the visit to the fire pit of Darsheeva. For those of you who don't know the story apparently the Russians were drilling for natural gas when the well exploded leaving a significant pit full of burning gas. Apparently it's been burning for 50 years and so far no one has managed to put it out. We set of from the Turkmen at lunch time then ride at 55mph, escorted by four wheel drives up to Darsheeva where we set up camp in exactly the same place as last year. A bit boring this as I've done it once but the pit is as interesting as ever just about worth a second visit. Ed and Lorraine have a small off in the sand on the way in but no damage. I got a good view from just behind him, the rear just slid off the side of a rut in loose sand and that was enough to tip them both off. We have another Pilov cooked by the guides; a few vodkas then off to bed. The first stomach problems appear today Max, Kev and Darren have gone down with the almost inevitable stomach bug Darren looks the worst and retires early. I have to say if you're going to be ill a campsite in the middle of the Karicom desert is not the place to do it. The shovel is heavily used.
