Friday the 14th:
Tucumcari is the windiest location we have stayed at yet. Not overly cold yet the wind is cold and relentless.
After dinner at Del's we went to the local KOA and finally got some wifi! So exciting!
I have developed the strange habit of doing a count of the feet hanging from the cubicles in the KoA toilets when I get in one. I like to know how many folk I am sharing the bathroom with!
Last night as I did it without thinking upon entering the bathroom, I was surprised to count 6 feet in one loo, 4 of them furry. Afew minutes later a lady and her dog exited the bathroom without washing any of their collective digits! I think the lady may have been sight- impaired though the dog was not on any special lead.
Another slow start in the morning, but Bodie managed to get some more turns of shooting his BB gun!
Saturday 15th:
Today we are going on a Twinkie hunt- we're going to find some CHEAP ones!
The drive from Tucumcari to Amarillo is not riveting.
We didn't do a whole lot today besides drive, eat and go to our staple Walmart.
one thing that really stood out was the wind farm near Amarillo. it did not look impressive at first but after we passed mile upon mile of spinning white structure, I was impressed! They still make me think of a sci-fi movie!
We noticed that the food chains increased. They have all the ones we gave come to know and already love , and gave added a lot more.
Today I learned that Texas Roadhouse is not like any roadhouse I know! The rolls are a feast in themselves. The server brought us 5 serves of the sweet soft rolls with cinnamon butter.
The steaks were pretty good, and the 7 yr old delighted on throwing the peanut husks onto the floor. He also wandered around the restaurant with my iPhone photographing every cactus he saw.
We pulled in to see Cadillac Ranch. Cadillac ranch is just off the highway on a dry patch of paddock. there us a line of about 10 Cadillac shells protruding from the the earth. they area piece of art, graffitied brightly. I obviously didn't research too well, as it turns out that we are meant to graffiti the Cadillacs ourselves, leaving our mark. Someone exiting the place kindly handed me their spray can which made it a fun experience for all. It was so, so cold though. That chill wind whipped around through the Cadillacs till it found us and tormented us till we gave up and left.
We stayed at a very popular RV park- the cheapest we have found at $21. Free coffee and donuts in the morning, indoor heated pool and sauna, and a small water park for the summer months!!!!
Sunday 16th:
When we woke up at what seemed like the crack of dawn ( courtesy of the Texas winter daylight saving!! ), to get ready for our first American church experience.
I will give this section it's own heading I think:
The Great Church Debacles
We had chosen one particular church for its good start time of 9 am; not too early, yet leaving enough time to comfortably arrive in our next location of Wichita Falls-4 1/2 hours away without too much stress.
We all dressed up, having been told that this is how it is done in Texas. Well, nearly all of us were dressed up. I wasn't, as my winter dress from eBay is sitting in the post office back home. I managed to buy a cute top here, which I wore with a cardigan and jeans.
As soon as we alighted from our beast, Bodie (well ironed in his new Sunday best) took one look at the folk around us and started complaining that everyone going into the chuch was dressed in jeans and hoodies. He was right!
We by-passed a line of brightly dressed people at the front door. They looked like they were getting ready to do a nativity play,
I figured.
But the guy just inside the church door informed us that 'today is different. Today is a Christmas show called ''GLO'', and it doesn't start till 11!'
We turned right around and went to the next church which was just starting up their Sunday School and discovered their service would be at 10:30!!
Argghh!
So we packed up the RV till time for the service. The church was beautifully decorated and there was a fully-suited-up choir.
We were heartily welcomed and it turned out that about 45 minutes of the service was a musical presentation by the choir. Followed by a short sermon.
Our time was well blown!
The 7 yr old was a trouper throughout the presentation.
He only asked 2 questions thoughout the service- unfortunately both were posed during quiet times of reflection.
1) after the collection: 'so was that money for the poor people or for the Lord?'
2) just after a prayer: 'do you see spotlights of green and yellow on people's faces when YOU have a seizure, Mum?'
I was quite intersected in the 4 throne-sized plush couch chairs up the front for the service leaders and minister to sit in during the service. Our pews were very comfortable too with soft thick cushioning!
We were excited to go to Sam's Club to find the elusive Twinkies everyone told us they still stock. Everyone forgot to tell us that it costs $45 to join Sam's before you can get in the door!
We left unjoined- and headed towards Wichita Falls. Texas sure us big big land- wide open spaces.
Wichita Falls is a little, flat town. So far the RV parks here are nearly half the price than any other state we visited so far.
We saw an Olive Garden on the way in for dinner and pulled in pronto. My friend Jen Neish had insisted we eat there and order the Alfredo sauce for their famous complimentary breadsticks.
Oh my sweet mother, the sauce was to die!! I want the recipe!!!
Now we are in the RV watching the Survivor finale LIVE!!

Dana Handy So you guys are in Wichita Falls!!! Very cool and not that far from us. Can't wait till tomorrow!!! I have been to the Cadillac Ranch. It is pretty cool, me thinks. I spray painted my name on there, though it is long covered up I'm sure. And I LOOOOOVE Olive Garden. Yummy!!! I'm surprised you couldn't get in Sam's. It is a wholesale club but they let you come in now (at least at ours) without showing your membership. But, to buy, you do have to show your card. However, I am a member....and have a card so hmmm - maybe tomorrow if there is one close (not sure if there is one near where we will be) we can go in and see if we can find the elusive Twinkies! I would be surprised to find any!
robyn So cool! Tell me who wins!
Michelle We actually only asked a customer outside the door.
sunday Olive Garden breadsticks...yummy and Texas Roadhouse rolls and cinnamon butter, even yummier! P.S. your 7 year old cracks me up! :-)
