This morning we had a late start. We decided to do the itinerary-planned Old Town walking tour. Old Town in Albuquerque is so pretty for us with the unfamiliar and exotic stucco used in the pueblo buildings.
We located a great souvenir shop then found our tour guide. A pretty unforgettable tour.....
For one,it was freezing. I had left my gloves back in the RV. The older boys-despite my advice-only had T-shirts and hoodies, and Kara had inappropriate shoes on for the weather.
And then, our tour guide had been on the turps and was in the mood for a long slow chat. Don't get me wrong, he knew his stuff. Just, there we were, up on an elevated verandah in the biting wind, listening to him talk for about a half hour, when all the pretty, historical buildings were being only pointed out from quite a distance. The grog made him all cosy, and he was talking about removing his hat, while none of us could even open our tee-totalling jaws to respond, from frostbite. When he had talked his way into 65 of our 75 minute tour and we still hadn't moved a half block on our WALKING tour, I mentioned we had so be away on time. He breezed through the rest of his talk in 10 minutes and we were able to go into the blessed warmth. The boys really enjoyed the tour despite the cold; I found I could barely pay attention as I was worried for the cold members of the family. The 7 yr old had begun asking 'is 75 minutes over?' about three minutes into the tour.
After a quick bite to eat, we were on our way to Tucumcari, through pale scenes of sleet bearing down on us and with snow starting to line the sides of the road. yay!
The 7 yr old excitedly enquired about stopping to make snow angels. Uhh, I don't think so!! I was so cold I was pretty sure I was going to get drowsy and die asleep under a snowdrift.
We were pleased to see the end of the snow as we powered along to Tucumcari. We got here by nightfall, and went to the Tripadvisor-recommended Del's Restaurant.
Some of the crew ordered his speciality Chicken-fried steak. They really enjoyed it. The 7 yr old had his first corn dog which he was thrilled about. A really good meal. All meals came with use of the soup and salad bar which was surprisingly vast and abundant with about 8 different dressings.
Finally tonight a KOA with working wifi!!!
Saying of the day: ' there's a story I could tell you about that.....' said about 20 times right before our tour guide Pat launched into a story.
Novelty appliance for the crazy Australian tourist: after you wash your hands you put your hand under the paper towel machine and it whirs out a section of paper towel for you to use.
7 yr old spot: the 7 yr old has picked up on the fact that we are different to the locals and upon entry to any establishment he now will inform the locals: ' we are tourists!!' This evening, I even heard an awful yet hearty attempt at ' G'day, mate!'
