We have been hustling every morning to get through our itinerary since we arrived in the US. But last night, after subtracting Zuni Pueblo from our day's events ( insert sad face, but too rough a road), we stayed up watching Duck Dynasty!!??!!?? i allowed everyone a sleep in and breakfast in front of a half hour cartoons (back within reach of my previously held title of Mother of the Year now)
This morning after exiting our RV park- (let me halt my sentence to note that the one we were at last night was a non - KOA and we noticed the bathroom heaters were not nearly as warm. Warmth is a commodity here!)-we drove along Route 66 for the first time on The Trip!! We were focused on going to El Rancho, the hotel favoured by Hollywood's movie stars back in the glory days of the Western movies.
Apparently I was the epitome of embarrassment for dragging the teenagers to an actual functioning hotel and doing the tourist thing! That abated a little when it became obvious we weren't the only ones doing it! It was impressive, with a Christmas tree nearly reaching the ceiling and twin hardwood rustic staircases that curved up to a full balcony. All along the balcony were photographs of the movie stars who have stayed there. I didn't get long enough to check it all out.
After visiting the gift store, we went up Route 66 a bit to Earl's. Earl's is a famous Route 66 diner. I wanted us to come here so that we could experience local Navajo artists come past our table to show us their craft! And boy did we get approached! Haha. no one was forceful to get a sale and moved on very readily. The food at Earl's was certainly basic. No raves from me. I wanted a photo with Earl to remember it by, but he looked a little grumpy.
From there, we were on our way to Albuquerque. Albuquerque is a big big place. 600,000 live there so some more of our plans got chucked out the window. The obligatory Walmart visit ended up taking the place of a Trader Joe stop, as it was clear across the other side of town.
I sacrificed a trip to the Glow candle company outlet as well. Tell me they make sub standard candles and I will feel better. I had also put some Christmas light viewing as part of our evening in Albuquerque, but the icy road made us rethink that as well. I was pretty disappointed not to visit Grandma Warner's K and I Diner which serves dishes that if you can manage to finish them, you don't have to pay. Panda Express near our Walmart was pretty tasty though. The servings were huge!
We had a relaxed night at KOA, though our free wifi attempts using KOA codes on our Apple devices were yet again thwarted.
7 yr old update: he has loved doing the touristy shopping thing and we have noticed he now has a taste for gaudy bling. He loves it! A new persona has emerged in front of our eyes when he has all the bling on at he same time, and turns his cap beanie backwards. He becomes this rapper dude, doing some DJ motions and some rapper hand motions all the while muttering the only rap he actually knows: 'Glory to God in the highest.'
So if you see the Route 66 pic on fb, that is who he is being!! The Bling Rapper
