Pancake Day!
Got up fairly early this morning as Leonie and I had planned to go and see a park that a girl in the hostel had recommended. It was a bit of a trek, mostly uphill too, but we persevered and I was really glad because it was really nice! Had a bit if craic playing in the park there, and there were LOADS of cool lizards having a wander around, I think they were maybe Goannas.
After a bit we went in search of an elusive pancake house that Leonie had seen a few days ago. We finally found it and had a crazily huge plate of pancakes each, with bananas and chocolate sauce and ice cream...actually epic but couldn't even finish it there was so much! Really glad we found pancakes though!
By the time we had finished it was cutting it a bit fine for me catching my greyhound bus south, especially as I phoned the hostel to double check my transfer and they said it probably wouldn't get me there in time! Slightly raging... So we raced back, and I was thinking I would have to half run to the bus station, or figure out the public buses, but the shuttle bus was just about to leave as we arrived so I ran up and made them stop! So glad I did because it was great to get a lift! But confused why it was going at that time though because it seemed to be just dropping a couple to the park in town...surely they could have just as easily organised for me to get dropped at the bus?! Oh well, lucky I caught them!
Leonie came with me to the station as we ended up in such a rush, which was nice as we could say goodbye properly without being hassled, she was staying in Brisbane to look for work!
After a couple of hours on the bus I arrived in Surfers Paradise!
I was picked up from the station by the shuttle to my hostel...not a regular bus though, it was a limo! Bizarre. It was pretty small and beat up, but still a limo! Very strange as I was the only person there too, and also the hostel was about 2 minutes down the road haha! Random!
Checked in and it was pretty nice, cool set up with a few small rooms off a kitchen/living area, almost like little flats. They also seemed to organise quite a lot for the guests which was good! Dumped my stuff and headed in to have a look around town, texting Gwen, Julia, Christina and Kat who were all in Surfers already! Gwen was just shopping, so I met her after the 5 minute walk to the shops, and she had just heard from the German girls who met us about 10 minutes later. We were just discussing doing a pub crawl, as there is meant to be very good ones in Surfers on Wednesday and Saturday nights, when we walked past a booth selling tickets for one, so I asked what it was all about. After a long talk which almost put me off haha, lots of talk about Ibiza etc, we asked about the price and got told $80 each! For 5 clubs with a drink in each bar (I was fairly sure that was misleading anyway, they always seem to get free and discounted drinks mixed up here...), needless to say that was pretty ridiculous. I was fairly sure no-one pays that though so waited to see where her best offer got us. After a lot of "oh this is the best I can do" and "do you want to buy more tickets for friends" which was all getting a bit tedious, we had an offer of 2 for 1 on half price tickets, making them $20 each... Still not awful but pretty steep! The German girls were very unimpressed haha, but Gwen seemed pretty keen for that price, considering it would theoretically get us all our drinks for the next two nights and club entry and a BBQ dinner the next day - it wasn't a bad deal really...but I am very distrustful of these people, and rightfully so, especially when she was the first person we had talked to about it!
After a walk to the cash machine with the other two saying they definitely weren't up for it I decided to go for it with Gwen, at the end of the day, it was the only thing I had heard to do in Surfers and was fairly cheap for what we were getting! Worth a try at least! I should explain here that Surfers Paradise is no longer a place where surfers particularly hang out...it's a lot more like Magaluf...possibly a tiny bit nicer haha.
We split up soon after all that, I did a bit of shopping then walked along the beach while I skyped mum which was pretty nice, and then stopped in McDonalds on the way home because I had decided to go off chips for Lent...wish I hadn't bothered, it was pretty disappointing!
Finally got back and had a shower then went to meet Kat in her room and use her hairdryer/straighteners! What luxury! She had been there a day or two before me and met some guys who were nice and had been in Surfers for ages, some of them working in the hostel. We chatted for a bit and they played drinking games - I was saving myself for the unlimited free drinks in the club that we had a voucher for later on. After a bit the other girls came from their other hostels and joined us, and we were eager to get going as of we wanted to go to the club we had to go before 11 for the vouchers to work! There was a group going from or hostel to another bar though where we would get a free drink and we thought they would be going fairly early so hung about for a bit...and a bit...and a bit...ended up leaving after 10 which was pretty annoying! The bar didn't seem too bad but Gwen and I figured we may as well check out the other club seeing as it was one of the reasons we had bought the pub crawl ticket for the next night! So after a drink we headed down the road to see what it was like and try and get in before 11.
There was a massive queue but we managed to make it in without having to pay, and it was actually fairly good! Nice having free drinks, although we realised you had to keep your glass to get it refilled so we couldn't just move between the 2 bars as planned which was disappointing as everyone was in the first one! One thing that was a bit weird about the club - which we soon found out was really common! - was that the uniform for the girls working at the bar was literally just skimpy underwear! Very, very odd. We ended up staying there for a couple of hours which was pretty cool, then went back to meet the others. Ended up having a really good night actually! Danced a lot and had some cheapish pizza on the way home haha.
