Today was my last day on my US tour and visited the one place I had been longing to see in San Francisco and that is Alctraz. It was fantastic. I did not know much about the history before going but was totally engrossed when I got there.
Alctraz is a NP located about 15 mins out in the middle of San Fran bay. It is a jail on its own island. It was a Federal jail but was shut down because it was too expensive too run. The jail is still in good shape and that helped to give a really good insight into how life was in Alctraz.
I had to get a ferry from pier 33 to get to the Alctraz. When I got there I picked up my audio tour which was really good. I learnt about all the famous escapes, the wardens, and a typical day in the lifeof a jail inmate.
I was so engrossed that I picked up a book to read from the store and in the store there was an ex bank robber signing copies of his new book.
After the Alctraz tour I did another bus tour this time going to the sights I had yet to go to like the Golde Gate Park, North Beach and the twin peaks.
It was then back to my hotel to pick up my bags and head to the airport for my flight via Auckland to Melbourne
