LISBOA
Tour of Lisbon - Included with the trip was a bus tour of Lisbon. We visited the main sites - Belem Tower, Moorish Citadel, Black horse Square. most sites were along the reallly wide river. Lisbon has the longest bridge in Europe @13km. Its a lovely city, very different to Spain. Lots of cobblestone Streets, very hilly and buildings are mostly white. They have trolleys that go round the city and up the street hills. At times very very tricky for a bus to get around!
In the afternoon Cass, Michael, Peter and I ventured off to the beach. We got off at Estoril and walked along the boardwalk to Cascais. Getting a ticket for the train was an adventure in itself. The machine was only in Portugese, and being held up by all the tousits so some lady tried to help us but we ended up with 4 return tickets for 1 person rather than 1 retrun ticket for 4 people! Getting a refund from the ticket office we just got a roll of the eyes from the lady. When we eventually got to the train the doors started to closing so Michael held them open like superman whilst we slid/pushed/climbed in.. and then the train sat there for 5 mins and the next people just walked up to the door, pushed the button and stepped on! We were in hysterics but the locals just thought we were crazy! The train trip took about 30mins which was along the coast the whole way. We got out at Estoril 2 stops from the main beach and walked along the boardwalk. It was absolutely gorgeous! The beaches were little coves along the coast with crystal clear water and white sand.. except the water was freeezing! . Hardly anyone was swimming but lots of sunbakers. We stopped for a bite to eat and beer before walking onto Cascais which is meant to be the main beach but still wasnt overly crowded. We caught the train back into the city and walked the main shopping street, had the most amazing Portugese Tarts and had dinner with Michale, Peter and Adele - Piri Piri Chicken! Homemade piri piri, hot on the lips but eatable. The streets were really windy and the wind was freezing so we headed back to the hotel for a cuppa.
Lisbon was very nice, not overly busy and pretty cobblestone streets. Not too many parks or greenery but on the coast and river.
