Okay so now we're in Exmouth. We're now a hell of a long way up - a LOT of driving and we can tell we've come far as the temp is just getting silly now. Today it was 46c here ..... 46c!!!!!!! Basically like standing under a large hand drier.
Again the scenery is the same on the drive up - red earth, roadkill - though a lot more - dead everything on the road - kangaroos, goats, sheep, even cows. We actually saw a headless kangaroo propped up on the side of the road! I got stopped by the police for going 120kmh, 10kmh over the limit. Apparently loads of fatalities this far up now as there are so many animals in the road and people swerve to avoid the cow etc (!!) and come off the road, then overcorrect and roll. In the middle of nowhere so no one to help you if you survive anyway, at least for a couple of hours.
So reason to be all the bloody way up here is the waters. Ningaloo Reef is just off the coast and pretty amazing. We went snorkelling today (you can also go out on a boat and swim with manta rays, whale sharks - but we are on a budget you know). Snorkelling really cool and main thing about this whole coast is that you are on long white beaches on your own. Literally nobody around, which means we get spoiled and completely used to it. It's beautiful but also means if you do encounter a shark (there's loads of them) or a stone fish (dead in 3 mins) then there really is no-one to come and help. Plus there's no cell phone coverage. So beautiful but it does make you extra careful.
Saw loads of species - had shoals of small fish swimming around us too. Michelle had a close encounter with a sting ray which seemed to run after her, very funny afterwards though.
Parrots everywhere. Beautiful pink and white ones in huge flocks, flying around, in the trees etc. Anyone who keeps a bird in a cage just needs to be shown what a bird can and should be doing - Grannies of Britain pay attention!! However, we did want to shoot them after 2 days as they make so much noise!
Back down to Perth tomorrow via Kalbarri for some beach time. Ah more white beach it's SO boring....
