It seems that altitude sickness tablets try to drain your body of water, as Harry, Rach & I found out from our 4am wee-lay race! Despite the disturbed sleep, we all made it to town for our 8am start & hopped in the minibus to take us up through the border, up to 4800m into the Andes for a spot of brekkie consisting of tea &......... surprisingly enough.....jamon y queso (ham & cheese) rolls! We realised here, just how cold this trip was gonna be, so all raided our rucksacks for multiple more layers. (NB: Paddy already shaking & suffering from the altitude). We then nabbed a 4x4 for the 5 of us (Harry, Craig, Ross, Rach & I) & asked a Spanish guy (Adrian) to join us. And good job we did, as he made an excellent translator for the day as we went to visit ice-covered lagoons, Hot Springs, (where Harry, Ross & Adrian had a dip & the rest of us in our 3 layers of clothing had more sense!), and then onto some fascinating, bubbling & steaming geysers. A late lunch at our 'hotel'(?!) followed, (where Rach got into bed & stayed as she was soooo cold!), from whence we shot across to the red lagoon (red from the micro-organisms, NOT the pink flamingos Harry!) & then back to the 'hotel' again. Hot soup & main course didn't take the edge off the cold, but the wine helped. After which I literally tucked my lady & 'boys' into their sleeping bags & 3 x blankets, where we all slept fully clothed (with Rach & I even wearing our hats!), in our -10 degrees 6 bed room.
