G'day mates!
We are still here in Perth and we have decided to stay in the area until we go to Sydney. We have booked for a week in a beach resort near Freemantle which is on the coast about 20 miles from Perth and go there on Wednesday. The pace of life has slowed down somewhat and we are doing more everyday things like food shopping, going to the cinema and just getting to know the area we are in rather than being 'on holiday'.
Our last few day days in Margaret River were great and we enjoyed exploring the natural environment. We drove right down to the forests of the south coast to see the giant trees which often grow to greater than 50m tall. We went on a treetop board walk which was like the ones the celebrities walk over in "Get Me Out Of Here' but much higher up. The journey was a six hour round trip and you get a real sense of how remote places can be in Australia as we hardly saw any other cars the whole time.
On the journey back we thought we were getting extra good at map reading when we found a more direct route home through the bush - that was until the road we were on turned into a dirt track for about 25kms. Needless to say this was a very interesting experience in a small Nissan car (the wheels were a lovely shade of orange by the end)! Not only that, we had to be careful when we came across some rather large kangaroos in the middle of the road. Luckily we didn't come close to hitting them as the many warning signs and frequent evidence along the side of the road (one being eaten by a wild pig) suggested was a real possiblility.
We also enjoyed a day exploring the picturesque coast north of Margaret River. The waves were very dramatic but great for the surfers we were watching. We also took a walk around Cape Naturaliste, to a whale watching lookout point and were lucky enough to see a couple out in the distance. This area had been devastated by a bush fire the previous year making the landscape look really weird and alien - it would be a great setting for an episode of Doctor Who!
We enjoyed a lovely meal for Damian's birthday and it's Kate's turn today - thank you for the birthday messages.
That's all for now.
