HoiAn has enchanted me. My first day of arriving, I had only 2 goals: visit the tailor and give my body the rest it needs to get over this cold. And I now after 3 days here, I have to admit that HoiAn is the perfect town for a respice. It's a quint little place, who's streets are lined with shops. From tailors to embroidery workshops, to potters, wod carvers, lantern makers, painters, dancers, musicians, this place was a personally charming. A definite must stop on anyone's itinerary.
I had lunch with my local tailor who took me to a real Vietnamese place hidden behind a back alley (as a thank you for all the suits I bought and the friends I referred to her). KyKy is very sweet lady and a smart business woman. She even arranged a cooking class for me with a local chef (not a tourist chef, but a real local woman who runs a Vietnamese restarant). It was a great little family run place, the woman's daughter translated the instructions and recipes to English for me as her mother continued slicing vegetables, preparing f
I also ran into my new Italian friend Elena, (from the 6 day Sapa trip). She's staying at the same hotel in HoiAn whcih is quite lovely with a pool, HBO, and a private balcony. it's great here and feeling a bit like home. so Elenaand I decided to spend New Year's together. Tomorrow I'm treating myself with a massage ($10 for 1.5 hours). I'm taking a sunset boat on the river for cocktails, then eating at a real local seafood restaurant (arranged by my tailor; non-tourist food), and then celebrating with the other travelers here in town for the new year. It's better than being alone in the big city of Siagon. This personal little town has become familiar and I'm just now being able to take advantage of my local connections. So stay I will. A quick 3 day stay has turned into a 5 day stop over.
