So my final island! NYC, the concrete jungle, dreams are made of it! If I can make it here then, other places will be far easier! I shared a cab with a friend I Made in Miami who was off here too. I then showered and crashed as it was gone midnight.
I got up and had my first NY bagel and then tried to go for a walk in central park, but with everything looking the same I soon ended up in the Bronx and promptly turned around. I found a subway and went to times square where I took dozens of photos. When it came to check them though I leant I hadn't taken any and my camera had broke. Videos, zoom, settings etc worked but not the photo button. So no pics of New York. I'm just lucky it didn't happen weeks before.
Walking around broadway I spotted 2 shows I wanted to see. Being the classy, dignified, mature guy I am the ones that interested me were; Elf: the musical and The Addams Family: the musical. I eventually chose to see both.
I then went to find the home of a fave TV show of mine, '30 rock' and went on an NBC tour. I got chosen to read a Teleprompter in front of a camera as a newsreader! I was Anchorman! Then we got to watch it back (cringe). DVD was too expensive so sorry guys, you'll never see it. Then I went on top of the Rockafella Centre to get as good a view as the empire state building. I resisted the urge to drop a penny.
I asked someone on the street directions and she also offered me free 'David letterman' tickets, he's a chat show host or something. But that interfered with Addams Family so I couldn't go.
Watched Elf and it was amazing! How buddy the elf first found New York mirrored my own experiences haha. They also made it snow throughout the theatre at the end, made me all christmassy!
New York at night looks totally different and the subways change route slightly so I got lost, no surprise there. But I eventually got home.
The next day I decided to go to the
natural history museum. It was phenomenal and huge. so many life like animals there, so many dinosaur and human bones, and so many artefacts depicting our past. There must of been 100 school trips there, and the kids just talk to you like your their best friend. 'wow that's a big, scary animal' 'ooh look at the leopard, cats are my favourite' etc. Someone needs to teach them stranger danger!
Then I went to the Addams Family (click click) musical, which starred 2 famous people I recognised and was hilarious. Its a concept made for the theatre, so camp and dramatic. Tim Burtons gonna have a hard time beating that with his 2012 remake.
I then got a text from the friend I made in Miami to meet in Soho, and then we searched for china town. Whilst walking she mentioned she wanted to see 'Avenue Q' on broadway. We quickly grabbed the subway to the right district and got last minute tickets to it. 3 shows in 2 days, not bad (but a hellova lot of cash). the show was very funny and clever, it used a sesame street approach to adult situations, it brought laughter and nostalgia. Plus the topics were all based on 22 year old ex-students so very relevant.
I have been here 2 days now, done lots of stuff, and yet I still cant work out why they call this place 'the big apple'!
