Teaching has nearly finished and the kids have started to grow on me. Well the younger ones have, the older ones are slightly less appreciative. Some of the kids are really short for 15. And when I caught one of them cheating on a test I took his secret piece of paper and when he got up to get it back I immediately raised my hand to the ceiling and there was no chance of him getting it. The class all laughed, so I am pretty much the class bully now.
In another class I was teaching daily routine in the past tense, so I was putting phrases like ´Brush teeth´´walk dog´get dressed´ for them to translate into full past tense sentances. I was brainstorming what routine actions there are in the morning and one student (the class clown) caught my eye and suddenly did a vulgar gesture, depicting something he likes to do to himself when he wakes up. I cracked up with laughter, almost to tears, which didnt help the situation...but it was hilarious. I continuosly thought about the euphamisms I could teach them in english for that action, but refrained from doing so.
The kids were all pointing to eachother today and saying ´Down´. I thought they meant upset so I was asking what was up. I soon learnt that they were calling eachother Down Syndromed, so when I was like Óhhhhh down syndrome´...they jumped on that translation! least they are learning some stuff, irrelevant as it is.
I also got asked out by this 17 year old girl in one of the classes, she had a note saying ´Will you go to a party with me?´and she kept comparing me to that famous twilight vampire. I respectfully declined. I keep getting stopped on the street by girls/woman, who can all say ´what is your name?´in english but thats about it....the convosation hits a sudden standstill and it becomes pretty awkward. I wonder if ´because the girls here think I am good looking!' is a relevant reason to seek asylum here or apply for a Visa.
Spent a messy night on monday in town, spent a while explaining what the phrase ´Jew them down´meant to an Isralie....who thought it was a hilarious verb! Plus there was (finally) two english people to speak with. So we spent the evening quoting some classic english humour (shooting stars, fast show) to the bemused (frightened almost) looks of Islanders and Americans. One person that night was female and called ´Michael´......a girl with a boys name, perhaps my friend Allain´s soulmate!
I also went on a tour of the Bay this week, so did some more snorkelling. Cant get enough of it now! Time is flying and I am getting into a good routine here. Occasionally, during such mundane moments, I remember exactly where I am and I get excited all over again!
