I heard about this islands on the carribean side of Panama that were supposed to be paradise islands, the once you'll see in a holiday brochure...According to the guidebook, it seemed to be an ok place but nothing to rave about! I tried to make a reservation at a place by calling but that whole conversation was just so weird! We weren't sure weather we had a place to slep or not when we left Panama City!
Rach and me went to the airport on Friday morning at 5-ish...We nearly didn't make it through security cause both of us were armed with pocketknives and bugspray. The plane was tiny, less than 20 people. We flew in to Rio Sidra and there were people hanging out on the airstrip, the whole place was so tiny! The area of San Blas is a archipelagos consisting of houndreds of various sizes islands and they are all inhabited with indigenous people, called Kunas. The Kunas are one of the strongest independent i-people in central america and by law it's only leagal for the Kunas to own land in San Blas. We were picked up at the aiport in a good dug-out canoe! We bypassed some islands and some of them looked stunning...I was almost dying of curiosity to see what 'our' paradise island would be like...It was stunning!!!! A dash of palmtrees, a handfull of caba? white sand, turquoise waters and only one other traveller! I was in the water the whole day, either snorkelling, swimming, reading, playing or just rolling around like a stranded whale! The whole day I had the biggest grin on my face cause the place was just out of this world!!!! While snorkeling we saw octopus, squid, lobster, stingray and schools of fish and a dolphin put on a show for us when we went over to the main island. We got a guided tour and they shoed us the public phone which was the phone I had called to when I tried to make the reservation. No wonder that call was an odd experience, cause not all Kunas speak spanish and my spanish is still horrible! For two days we had fresh seafood for lunch and dinner, like lobster which is never in my budget anywhere! Too bad I'm allergic to shellfood but then again the stargazing from the outdoor toilet wasn't too bad! So yes, I just had the two most amazing days in paradise, a perfect ending to my central american adventure.
I still have a few days here in Panama City which has highrises and great shopping!!!!
