Day trip day!! Rented a car a few blocks from our hotel, and headed out to I'll d'Orleans - called the “Garden of Quebec”, “Treasure Island”, and the “Cradle of French Civilization in North America”. A short drive out of Quebec City and over the Ile d’Orleans suspension bridge, we arrived in this quaint rural setting. Once we crossed the bridge, we were in a rural setting completely opposite to the bustling urban life of Quebec City.
The main road in town is called Chemin Royal, which forms a complete loop around the island. Ile d’Orleans was one of the first places in Quebec to be colonized by the French, giving it the title, “The Cradle of French Civilization“. A large amount of French Canadians can trace their ancestry to present and past residents of the island. The island remains devoted to farming and agriculture, and has become a popular destination for those interested in tasting local products and regional cuisine.
We drove along with no particular plan, stopping at quaint shops, art galleries, wineries and an historic church, where we felt the need to visit the confessional.....lol
I thought we had left construction season behind in Winnipeg....NOT. On our drive we ended up in a construction zone that had a wait of 30 minutes. The construction worker was quite rude - said "No Anglais" and waved us off. We decided to turn around and crossed the island to the other side and continued on. Our lunch choice was a restaurant with local winery products - wines and beers - pretty good.
After about 6 hours of meandering around the island we headed back to the city. Very easy to drive in QC - my navigators (Leanne and Gerry) could use some practice co-piloting...lol
Last night on the town - went to an Italian restaurant called Bello. We had an amazing meal of some kind of Ravioli - to die for! Gerry is going to take Rick there for supper on Tuesday. The night before, an Alpha Romeo was parked out front - clientele was interesting :)
Signing off from QC. Another great trip with two fantastic friends :)
