Monday 12th June
What a couple of days we have just had!
Sunday was hot! Maybe we reached about 35-6C, no wind and very calm. Bright blue skies, no clouds and tranquillity. So, of course, we went cycling! Once moving it was OK as one generates a breeze of sorts. Stop and the heat builds very quickly.
Meryl elected to go about 10 miles or so and that was fine. The back roads through the fields are reasonable in that the surface is not to broken or damaged. The minor road onto which we turned was better but even the few cars were a nuisance. After 3 miles or so we came to Pessac where one can cross the Dordogne. Here were road works and the 'Deviation' although in this case only a few metres. Through the town crossroads made as make a choice and, as one always does, I deferred to Meryl who took the right turn fro a village at 5kms. This proved to be an interesting choice as having crossed a small stream it immediately turned up hill and the climb beckoned! With 3 hairpin bends and about 1 mile in length it was not an inviting prospect. Indeed, she decided to walk some of it but knowing that I need some hill practice I continued until near the top.
After recovering we headed back towards the camp site but in need of little more time on the seat I continued. Once I had crossed the main road, following a sign marked Chateau Moulin Caresse, and then the railway line I came to a small village and the next climb. On this occasion I decided to wait until tomorrow when I could give that one a go.
The rest of the day was spent lolling on the campsite, reading and recovering from the morning efforts.
