Today was varied but with the sun shining we wanted to enjoy the opportunity to sit in the sun shine, outside. Breakfast was enjoyed slowly, surrounded by a flotilla of Dutch nationals. The coffee, even if of a dubious Italian origin tasted good in the late morning warmth.
Then it was shopping. Given that we thought the nearest supermarket was a bout 6 miles away we decided to but for the weekend; fish, chicken, lamb and vegetarian plus other assorted goodies including Rochefort and Chaource cheese. Also 2 bottles of local wine, a Tourane red and white for sampling of course. Later we had to try and find gas, but this proved to be a real challenge and we failed,
But to cycling and a trip along the cycle route, enjoying the pleasure of French drivers. Don't anyone say that they are better than the British because they understand the cyclist better. What the seem to believe, and maybe this has always been the case, is that the driver of any car must, absolutely must be in front of the next one.
Two incidents. Near the camp site is an old bridge with supports like a medieval castle/chateau which is wide enough for two vehicles. As we cycled back towards the cycle track, at about 5.30 pm cars, of course, wanted to pass us and one did, leaving very little room for the approaching car. It was forced to halt to void the inevitable collision, the driver causing the problem just kept going, perhaps fearing road rage.
Later as I went on further on my own I was on a road which has two narrow bridges. Having already crossed the one with priority to approaching vehicles, I could see, in the distance a car heading towards the next bridge. It seemed to me that I would arrive first and anyway its my right of way. I could also see that the car had no intention of letting that happen. Speeding he arrived at the bridge as I did but obviously at speed! As its got a hump back, slight but noticeable, he almost took off over it, the car body clearly lifting and then slamming into his suspension as he grim facedly, snarlingly proved a car is superior to us mere cyclists.
We both, that is Meryl and I, enjoyed the cycling although I will need to do quite a bit more before the legs are fitter and I have more stamina. Hopefully, but the weather forecast is not promising, we can get out tomorrow. Otherwise Sunday is more likely.
