The Radweg
Man it was a hell of a day. I did 76 miles under reasonably difficult conditions. It rained and blew at the beginning and at the end. Now I am at a hostel in Würzburg and clean and warm with 3/4 of a bottle of wine in me. It was difficult finding my way out of Bamberg. Mostly because I hadno map. Once I had a map I was glad to be on my way. Saturday in Bamberg is tourist day in Bamberg. Yikes! I rode the Main (pronounced Mine) and went through numerous little Bavarian towns that were having wine festivals. One was picnic tables, orange as far as the eye could see. People were gathering and I thought of all places to stop, this would be the best. But it was still early so I kept moving. I knew I could make it to Würzburg if I kept going. I climbed some good sized hills that for the first time on this trip made me think about shifting into the granny gear. But I didn't have to and the view at the top of the ridge was amazing. Rolling farmland and wineries as far as I could see which was pretty much to the wall of rain and rain clouds that were closing on me. But where the early part of the day had been fraught with something less than luck I was quite lucky in the falling rain. I found an open grocery store. I got wine and brandy. Chocolate too, of course. I was concerned that the path I was on would dead end at an autobahn. I questioned a woman at a crosswalk and she gave me some of the best directions of all time and within the hour I was coming into Würzburg. More than that the hostel I was looking for was literally on the bike path. I met a young couple from Minnesoat traveling for fun. A man from Melbourne and I chatted for some time. All seems set for a good night's sleep. Good night.
