The Radweg
The tour is underway. It took a train out of Frankfurt yesterday and rode 66 miles through the Heesen countryside to the university town of Marburg. The trail ran along with the Lahn River and was very nice. However, I got lost about...oh...a dozen times. Sometimes it was the signs but mostly there were so many turns that if I looked away only briefly I could miss the correct one. And I did with consistent rapidity. But I pulled into my campsite at about 8 o'clock and Marburg is fantastic. As the guidebook says, it was untouched by the war more than almost any city in Germany. It's beautiful and old.
It was nice to get out of Frankfurt. It's a huge city that was much like being in a big city in the US. I speak German all the time out here in the smaller towns. It's great. Today, I was was up at 5 and into town before it came to life. Then I took pictures all day with stops in the Bäckerei (bakery) and Metzgerei (butcher) and for the obligatory beer. The old town is a mze of cobbled streets and very narrow alleys. I climbed up to the Marburg Castle and saw some of the very old churches today. Well, the World Cup is beginning soon so I must find a good spot to watch from.
Oh yeah, here's the score of Nathan's International Behavior Cup. A match in my hostel room resulted in a decisive score: Canadians 2, English 0. Also, South Koreans have proven especially friendly. They get three points. These points were generated from two businessmen who took an deep interest in my bike and told me I was very brave for trekking around alone. The other point came from two young men also putting their bikes together straight out of boxes in the train station. So, I guess that's the proper place to do that. Tschüß.
