Adventures of a Global Wanderer
My hotel for the next two nights in Samarkand was the newly and quite lavish Hotel Grand Samarkand. It looks like a simple brick building from the outside but upon entering you are immediately dazzled by the multiple crystal chandeliers in the reception and large area rugs.
The needed to register my passport again and attach a slip which every hotel needed to do so I went up to my room. It seemed like I was the first guest in this newly built room. The brick walls had been painted a gentle white shade and the room still smelt like a furniture showroom.
The hotel also has a rooftop pool and terrace which was locked due to cold weather. In the basement there is a gym, sauna, and bank with money exchange counter. The building has a large central atrium between the three floors.
I wanted to leave my battery cameras charging and go out and look for some food nearby (see next entry). When I came back I tried the tv channels.
Disappointingly again there were no Uzbek music channels. I did have BBC, Euronews, DW German News, CCTV China, Rai TV Italy, France 24, and other Russian Channels. They also had Arirang which is an overseas Korean channel which we dont get in Korea. Strangely I ended up watching a Korean drama and K-Pop music show, both of which I never watch in Korea
The room carpeting was very soft and it did feel like home the two nights I stayed there. Oddly every hotel had warnings about not to wash your clothes in the bathroom and that you will get fined if caught doing so?
They have another hotel opposite which is the original and closed for low season.
