Hi guys !
Ok, so just when I thought nothing could top Mexico (and not that it has) we arrive in Caye Caulker, a tiny tiny island off the coast of Belize. It's caribbean all the way, but stragely and wonderfully a blend of hispanic and creole heritige. The island motto here is 'Go Slow' - it's what people say instead of goodbye, so there's a big clue to the vibe here.
Before I go on, I don't know if it's world news or of just local interest here, but the eruption of Mount Pacaya in Guatemala will disrupt our schedule somewhat and we won't be climbing any live volcanos as planned (yeah, real bummer eh?) Personally, I'm hoping we hang around Caye Caulker a bit more. Next, the apocalyptic storms over El Salvador and Guatemala 2 days after the eruptions and evacuations was just plain mean of nature. They've evacuated Guatemala City so there's no way we can get anywhere near the danger zone. So I'm afraid no kidnaps or perilous adventures on the cards for the time being !
However, last night I developed Angioedema - a very attractive swelling of the face, hands and feet. It's a reaction to insect bites. By 4am last night, I could have scared Godzilla with just a smile, he he. My face became a puffer-fish's head, my lips were like car tyres and my eyes were virtually separated from my body...It was a pretty bad night but I made it through and saw a doctor in the morning who gave me 30 days of crap to take. Go on, laugh, I've been living it up pretty well so a little sting was just a matter of statistics.
As a result, I've missed a day of snorkelling on the second longest reef in the world with its rich marine life and a visit to the Blue Hole (this was going to be another 'brochure to reality' moment for me but ah well, least I've deflated to an almost human size and the pain has gone and I feel fine again.
Right, enough blogging, I'm off to the bar at the end of the island to watch the next sunset...
My love to all at home, 'Go Slow'...
