Ass-salam-ualikum
Monday 9 Nov - After a slight delay with the departure time in Dubai, I finally landed in Sri Lanka at 05.30 and then queued and queued and queued to get through the Immigration - finally collected my bags at 07:00.
As I walked through to the exit doors, there was large number of people holding name plaques - I finally found the gentleman holding the plaque with my name on it. Nandana (guide) explained that it would take about an hour to get through the morning rush hour traffic- school traffic. School times in Sri Lanka are from 7.30am to 1.30pm, in the main the school uniform is white - they look look very cute !
As we drove through the areas of Colombo, I realized that Sri Lanka is not that different from my parents' homeland India. There are loads and loads of coconut palm trees, banana plantations and mango trees. The other resemblance with India is the way in which they drive - absolute maniacs, if it wasn't for the fact that I wanted to see the places we were driving through, I would have shut my eyes all the way to the hotel !!!!
Anyway, finally arrived at the hotel at 8.30, after checking in, I had a quick look around the hotel, before catching up on some well deserved sleep.Three hours later and after some light refreshment, I took a stroll down to the beach and found a quite spot where I sat and listened to the waves lapping up against some small rocks. Whilst I was sat on the beach I noticed a beautiful hotel about 5 mins from where I was staying and decided to check it out - it's gorgeous and guess what I realized that I have booked myself into that hotel at the end of my time at the Orphanage.
I left the beach and took a short stroll into the main High St (ha ha ).I managed to find a local supermarket (oh no, just writing that word has made me think of work, I'll have to stop using it again. I guess the discount rate has changed by now - stop it Dee !) and after buying some fruit & water I headed back to the hotel.
Tue 10 November - 12.22 local time (UK 06.43) - After breakfast, I headed for the main town centre again and came across the Internet Café, which I'm using to update this blog. It costs 50 sri lankan rupees an hour, that's about 30p - not bad ! I haven't bought my camera lead, so will download pictures at a later stage.
Crossing the roads here is like taking your life in your own hands. I needed to get to the other side, so decided to stand behind a local guy who was crossing, in my judgment he was more experienced than me - phew I made over safely ! Don't think I will be crossing too many roads here !
I'm being picked up at 5pm today and will be taken to the Girls Orphanage, which is about an hour's drive from here.
Khuda Hafiz / Bye for now
