Today was going to be a pretty grim day and we knew it. We planned to go and see the killing fields of Cambodia and then s-21 prison. I learnt about this genocide in my state module in year two so I was already pretty fascinated about it. We went down for breakfast and met mark who we travelled with in some parts of Vietnam. A guy called Cuba also asked if he could tag along so we gathered our stuff and headed off in the tuk tuk together. The driver was charging us 18 dollars for the day which is actually fairly pricey but no one could be bothered arguing. It took about half an hour to get to the killing fields where we then paid the 6 dollar entrance fee. We were given a headset and then showed the route to walk. All of the points on the map where basically graves where the Khmer Rouge had buried up to 500 people per grave. The guide told is to be careful as when it rains sometimes bone fragments and teeth raise to the surface. Jesus Christ. It's hard to believe that this went on not so long ago...
The tour was really emotional. The worst part was seeing the giant tree which the Khmer Rouge used to hit babies off before they threw them into the graves. I think most people shed a little tear at some point during the tour, I had to resist the urge to run out and book a flight home and burry myself under my covers! I lit some incense for the dead and left them beside the display of skulls, then got out of there. Our tuk tuk man then took us to s-21. We had sandwhiches in a little restuarant across the street before entering into the prison. It was much the same grimness, filled with pictures of the deceased and tools used to torture. I was glad to finally get home at the end of that day!
Becky and I swam in the pool for a bit as then had a couple of mojitos. Probably to Drown our sorrows. Tonight we decided to head out and see what the Cambodian night life has to offer. We facebooked Eric and arranged to meet at a restaurant called alleycat. The place was incredible, it was a Mexican restuarant where I munched some quesadillas and becky had a chimmy chonga whatever the eff that is. There was also live music, a nice accompaniment to the meal! After the meal Eric headed home as he wasn't in the party zone but mark Becky and I headed to 'Rods bar' on Eric's recommendation. It turned out to be pretty cool. Mark suggested tequila which is never a good plan haha! Something that unnerves me about this place is the amount of children who are out working. Little girls and boys kept coming up to us in the bar selling us things. They shouldn't even be in a bar never mind working! After the bar we headed to the 'top nightclub' called pontoon. It turned out to be pretty ace, we just danced all night and had good fun. The decor was actually nicer than any club I've been in back home! Cambodia knows how to party!!
