Deborahs journey
On Saturday morning i left Adelaide very early to get the coach down to Cape Jervis. This journey took around 2 hours, it was then straight on to the ferry which took around 45 minutes to get across to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island (KI). The weather was nice and sunny so the crossing was very calm. After getting off the ferry i found the Adventure Tours Australia bus and tour guide. There were only 9 of us on the tour. After a quick stop at the shop in Penneshaw our trip was underway.
First stop was Pennington bay, which is a popular surf beach, as the sun was out the sea was a mixture of beautiful blue colours and the sand very white. There wasnt much surf but were still 3 surfers in the water. As i first stop on KI the bay was impressive. After a short walk here we next went to American River. This is a very small town but we didnt go to the town, we had lunch by the water. There were pelicans around including one on top of a lamppost! Lunch was nice baguettes and salad. AFter lunch we went to Seal Bay. By the time we arrived here the weather had turned cloudy. A guide took us down to the beach where there were lots of Australian sealions and quite a few pups. We were able to walk along the beach as long as we didnt get too close to the sealions. The pups looked very cute. After here we went to Little Sahara, which is a large area of sanddunes inland. This was very bizarre to see on the island as i was expecting to see this on KI. After walkin to the top and see the view across the dunes to Vivian bay and the National Park we drove around to Vivian Bay which has been voted one of the best beaches in OZ. THe weather wasnt too good when we were here so has probably looked better. After getting too close to the waterwe left to find some Koalas. These were all in the eucalyptus trees, and a few were awake and moving around which was unusual. It had now started to rain so we left to go to the farm we were staying at in the Flinders Chase National Park. We were staying in nice new cabins. After a bbq for dinner we walked around the farm as the KI kangaroos and Tammar Wallibies come across from the national park to feed on the nice grass on the farm! as the 'roos are nocturnal we hadnt seen any earlier. THere were lots around the farm and the wallabies looked very small against the big chocolate brown KI 'roos. I even saw my first wild bush tailed possum. THe wild animals are not too scared of humans and we were able to walk quite close to them.
On Sunday we were away early to fit everything into today. First stop was a drive through the national park to Remarkable Rocks. (see picture) these are huge rocks on top of large area of rock which have been eroded away to leave these bizarre shapes. Being at the far west point on the island it was very windy here. Next stop wsa just around the corner to Cape de Coudiec. Past a lighthouse built by some cornish people and then a walk down to the rocks to see the seals. Walking around the corner i came to Admirals Arch, another sight caused by the weather and home to more seals. Most of the seals were sleeping and sheltering from the wind.
After waiting for the rain to stop we headed back along the National Park. We stopped to do a walk through the bush which took us to the National Park visitor centre. On the walk we saw two wallabies, one of which had a very very small joey in her pouch and one kangaroo. AFter eating lunch near the visitor centre we had a bit of a drive back along the island to Stokes bay. Here we had to walk through some rocks which brought us out on to the beach. Another pretty beach with green fields behind and a little surf on the water. At the far end of the beach there are small rocks and rock pools, but no wildlife found in them.
On the drive from Stokes Bay to Kingscote (the 'capital' of the island) i saw a few wedge tailded eagles. After a quick drive through Kingscote (it was sunday so everything was shut up) we headed back to Penneshaw. After dinner in the pub we caught the ferry back to Cape Jervis, and the coach back to Adelaide and finally arriving back at the house at 11.15pm. It was a long weekend but managed to see alot of the island and a lot of wildlife.
