The wedding - maddest preparations for a wedding, completely crazy - and nothing ever runs on time. Family, friends, neighbours, animals overrunning the house. People dropping large wads of cash in envelopes for the couple. And as is the norm for Spain as we are discovering everything was running late but no- one seemed too concerned. Australians are so uptight and anal in comparison.
Anyway we all boarded a bus and headed to Oia. There was singing and dancing and yelling. There was a huge contigent of young Spanish people who were wild. The venue itself was magnificent- on the Atlantic coast - breathtaking views and of course the sun setting over the ocean - just beautiful. When we get a chance to access computer we will put up some photos. They exchanged vows and the English translation was hysterical - they said Glenn do you take Maria actually as your wife really? We were waiting for "are you sure?" it was really lovely though and Ava got to give them the rings. Molly threw flowers. The pre nibbles were fantastic. Tapas style - olives, caviar, calamari, tortilla, croquettes. Then it was inside for the reception - and the food was like nothing we've ever experienced before. All up there were about 10 courses with alcohol to go with each. In Australia the nibblies and first course would have been it. And every time a new course came out everyone would get up and start cheering and music would play and you'd wave your serviettes above your head. The kids really got into it. We had fish, king prawns, grilled tiger prawns, scallops (seafood is huge here) weird little molusc type things, sorbet mid courses, steak and two rounds of dessert. It went on for hours. In between there were all sorts of weird Galician customs like a group of men with a chainsaw and axes carrying a log and chased Glenn and chopped off his tie?!! Then they came out another time with the bride and groom made out of balloons and ran around the room. There was a full on sword dance between Glenn and Maria while cutting the cake. And then the dancing started and went on for the rest of the night. The Spanish so know how to party. Deb read the speech in Spanish and it went really well - the rellies were crying and all hugged and kissed me. Wow what a night!!!
