On Tuesday we rented a car for the day so we could go visit the El Yunque rainforest. We heard so many wonderful reviews and we needed to do something besides lay around. The resort is great but we are getting lazy. We walked down the road and rented a car from Charlie. Best prices in town.
As a side note, I need to tell you all that Eric and I have a new mascot. His name is Ozzie and he was brought to us by Lesley and Ray. He traveled all the way from Australia to his new home. We have been challenged to take Ozzie with us and photograph him around the world. Challenge accepted. From now on Ozzie will pop up in random photos. You will notice in todays photo album that he is going on a road trip with us today to the rainforest.
We arrived at the Park around noon. Our first thought was that this place is packed. There were people everywhere. We decided to make the best of it anyway. Afterall, we did pay $4 each to get in. We did enjoy the visitors center and a short hike around the welcome center.
We set off into the park with our little rental car working hard to get us up the hill. There were cars and people everywhere. Nothing makes Eric and I more crazy then people disrespecting National Parks. It is even worse when people are jumping guard rails and treading on fragile ground while dragging there kids along with. This seemed to be common practice here. We could barely find parking spots at the designated points. We ended up driving most of the way to the top and turning around at a gate blocking the road before we could get to the highest lookout tower.
The highlight of the day was finding an off the beaten path leading to abandoned picnic areas. It was so pretty and peaceful and each little covered area had a different feeling to it. We only ran into 3 other people on our little hike.
After exiting the rainforest we turned East and went to Kioskos De Luquillo. We heard this was a cool little strip of restaurants and shops. We stopped there to maybe grab a bite to eat and find some good bargains. All the food was fried meats which isn't our thing. There was festive music coming from every direction and the people were extremely friendly. We did not find any food interesting to us and as far as we could tell their were no bargains to be had. We did see some crazy school buses though.
We decided to head back to our resort for our complimentary happy hour. They are so accomadating to us here. They fulfill our every request. We requested a vegan appetizer this evening and they provided us with a huge crudite platter. Our veggie plate and other snacks offered filled us up.
Lesley, Ray, Eric and I ended up hanging out in the lounge until almost 10pm. We were drinking wine and having a very heated game of tri-ominoes. It was exactly what we needed. You would think that four good hearted, empathetic, generous people would be nicer to one another but when the dominoes hit the table the trash talking commences. We laughed and had a blast. I did not win.
Today is our last day of vacation. I have rented a cabana at the pool for the four of us. We are going to relax and enjoy our beautiful resort for one last day before we head home.
