My train ride to Barcelona had a layover in Montpellier so I decided to stay the night. I am sure Montpellier is a fine city, as the front desk clerk suggested but I was not impressed at all.
Remember I said the people of France had removed the stereotype of French people being rude...the people of Montpellier put it back in place.
I practically had to grab the waiter to get service at a restaurant; as I got in a cab, the driver remarks, "you don't speak French?!" in just the tone you would imagine; the information booth at the train station ignored me as long as they could, unsavory characters all around the station asking for money and cigarettes.
It cost 50 cents to use the washroom, there were guards with machine guns on the platforms of the train station, this may be a common site for those who travel a lot but it was a shock to my system. I do believe it was the first time I have seen anything like this.
So I still love the people of Cannes and will mark my experience in Montpellier as the exception, not the rule and move on to Barcelona.
