It is the last day of my week at the school in Cape Town and it has been an amazing experience. The school I am based in is the Redhill Pre School in Redhill Township. A township is a shanty town and the kids there don't get the same start in life that the rest of us get, so the school is supported by volunteers and projects that pay for the meals and the teachers wages. I am with a class of 13 children who are around 3 years old, and that's a challenge right there - what do you teach 3 year olds? I am not even sure what they should be learning right now! Thankfully the teacher is great and she has been giving me ideas of what we should be teaching, and then letting me come up with a way to make it interesting for the kids. You definitely need a creative head on your shoulders!
Today was probably one of my favourite lessons - senses. I used some of the supplies at the volunteer house to come up with different tastes, sounds and smells so the kids can get an idea of the different types of senses. I have never seen so many kids fighting to taste a lemon, or so many boys wanting to wear perfume!
The kids are great and always get really involved, well, before they start to jump on you. Lessons last for about an hour but the rest of the time is spent singing songs such as the ABC song and nursery rhymes (well the ones I can remember anyway), and playing with the kids. The project is as much about playing with the kids and giving them loads of attention as it is about teaching them, and that is why it is so much fun. As long as you come with a sense of fun, and a willingness to be climbed on, have your hair brushed/pulled, and be totally exhausted, you will love it!
