Arriving in Accra
Sorry for the delay in the first entry, It has taken us a while to get used to our surroundings. This is the first day that we have not been accompanied by a member of the organisation we are volunteering for!
Our journey here was smooth and uneventful... I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of food British Airways gave us and free wine, my last for 3 weeks! It is considered rude for women to drink or smoke here (I am calling this a detox!) Although the food was good the highlight of the flight was coming over the Sahara desert, it just went on an on, an amazing sight.
We arrived in the capital of Accra late on Tuesdau night, to be met by our names on a piece of paper. I was very excited by this, have always wondered who on earth had their name on a piece of paper! We were dropped at a hotel by our two hosts Eric & Rose. It was lovely, a real flushing toilet, twin beds and even a swimming pool. Things were off to a great start.
On Wednesday Eric took us to change our money from dollars to Cedis, as well as taking us on a tour of the capital. It was very overwhelming, so many different things happening; women carrying things on their heads and pushing carts. So many stalls with different colours and products, you could buy anything from water to a car tyre. I had a slightly scary moment when a man pulled me towards his stall and said that 'he liked me as I tried to get away a woman also pulled me, they were just curious and I managed to get away (don't worry Glenn, they weren't offering enough camels for me!!). Eric also showed us a memorial garden for one of the most respected presidents. It showed a stark contrast to the poorer parts of the city.
We had lunch at his home, nice and simple rice! Then we were taken with Rose to start our 12 hour bus journey to Tamale.
I will continue the journey next time I log on, maybe tomorrow! Miss you all... have a cup of tea for me or a glass of wine!! xx
