I was blessed to have my friend Margie drop me off at the airport. The flight was meant to leave at 2:45am (stupid o'clock) but there was a delay and so my flight didn't leave until 3:30am. This flight was the longest air-trip I've ever made (about 7hrs). Previously the furthest I'd gone was Fiji. I'm a reluctant flyer at the best of times, but after a small amount of self-medication I found the flight pretty good. Spent some time dozing, watching TV and a movie as well. It was pretty cool watching the TV screen tracing out the plane's flight across the Australian continent, then Indonesia, Malaysia and into Singapore. Oh they fed us well on the plane too - a snack soon after take-off and then quite a nice breakfast of juice, fruit, a hot dish, a croissant & coffee.
We arrived about 8:30am local time [10:30 Oz-time]. The processing coming through Singapore was painless and after going through immigration I collected my one suitcase and was straight through customs. We came in at Terminal 1 - Singapore has three terminals. Initially I had some problems with an ATM but that was soon solved with some help from a friend. I then took the Skyrail to Terminal 3 where my hotel is - Crowne Plaza. Having the hotel in airport terminal means there is really good access to shopping - I picked up a few things cheaply to have for lunch & dinner.
Today was Remembrance Day - the 11th day of the 11th month. In Singapore they hold a special remembrance service at the war cemetery on the Sunday closest to 11 November - unfortunately that wasn't today...so my remembering was pretty low key.
Travelled into the city on the MRT (Train). Had to change trains at a station called Tanah Merah which is funny because there's a suburb in Logan called that. The train was fairly similar to Brizzy trains although much cleaner, newer & better organised. (The train coming home was choccas). Got into City Hall station in search of some free wi-fi...found a Starbucks but alas the connection was so hit & miss it afforded me no advantage at all. Went and sat in St Andrews Cathedral to pray and went for a bit of a walk around & took a couple of piccies. One building that DID take my eye were twin towers that seemed to have a ship resting across them. Another was the iconic Raffles Hotel. Hopefully I'll be able to upload a few piccies soon.
