This morning we left Rolf, Petra, Maaike and Kim's house, we were picked up by John and Magda and driven to Rene's house. It was a really long drive and we needed several toilet stops - I never thought it would be so uncomfortable for the entire 2 mins it took to go round the corner to a different street in Moordrecht again.
After a coffee and a special decorated cake, John and Magda took us to Delft. Delft has a large uni there and the Royal Delft porcelaine factory - the famous blue painted and glazed pots. Just have to add that the inspiration for the Dutch came from the Chinese with the Ming and Qing dynasty porcelaine. The Dutch brought them back from their travels and copied them. That's 1 tick to the Chinese side.
We saw the hand painting and the firing and glazing.
Mariska had to have a few things - 1 large vase, 6 large dinner plates, 6 medium dinner plates, 6 large soup bowls, 6 coffee cups, 6 sushi plates - and Magda, you were not helping by encouraging her. All being shipped home ready for us to receive in 6 weeks. My AMEX card took a beating. Hopefully she will pay me back on one (?several) of these nights.
We then walked around the beautiful town of Delft, pity about the rain. Had the best appletart with slagroom in an cosy cafe.
Visited the main church in Delft where all the royal family are buried since William of Orange who was assasinated by a French hitman hired by the Spanish (boo hiss). The hitman was caught, had various parts of his body removed by hot tongs, drawn and quartered, heart cut out and placed on is face and then decapitated. He was reportedly calm during the ordeal - WTF....!!!
Dinner in a Japanese restaurant in Moordrecht with Rene, John and Magda.
