Our Year of Adventure
The alarm was ringing at 9am again and although we had no exciting plans, we needed to be up to see Katja and Petri before they left to go home.
After breakfast, and with Katja and Petri on their way, we set about sorting out everything to "close" Venejärvi for a while. David chopped firewood for the house, cabin and cottage while Maria sorted out the food in the fridge and the pantry.
It took a while, but eventually we were all in the packed car and drove to Sieppijärvi first, but Grandma was not home. We carried on up the road to Kolari and stopped in at Tarja's.
Tarja made us nice pasta bolognaise dinner followed by coffee and Joulusuklaa (the most delicious chocolate bar from Fazer with all the flavours of Christmas in it).
Maria was given her birthday present from Tarja early, she got sausage stick just like David’s. Well, almost the same – the handles are made of wood and are all completely unique, they’re not made in a factory to specific specifications.
We continued our journey to Äkäslompolo and stopped off at the supermarket to do the recycling of cans and bottles. In Finland, recycling is slightly different – when you buy something in a can or bottle, you actually pay a deposit on top of the price of the goods, roughly €0,15 for a can and €0,40 for a plastic bottle. You then take the empties back to the recycling machine and you get a credit slip which can be used or cashed in at the supermarket. We ended up with over 10 euros so with a couple of more euros from our pocket, we bought more beer for David.
