Our Year of Adventure
The temperature had risen again throughout the night and was now up to -9c. And with warmer temperature comes the snow too. It looked like it snowed throughout night and it was still snowing, the car was barely visible under the blanket of snow.
After some breakfast, David needed to get outside and start clearing the snow again. There must have been about 15cm of snow so it took over an hour to clear the car, driveway and paths.
By mid afternoon the temperature was up to -5c, it had got warmer by 20 celcius in two days and the snow wasn't letting up either.
We were taking it easy indoors, just reading and watching television, but David was watching the snow build up again, another 8cm or so had fallen so he was back out again. No rest for the wicked!
In the early evening we were starting to get hungry and couldn't be bothered to cook so we went to Julli's for dinner. Julli's has been open in Äkäslompolo since 1999 and the menu probably hasn't changed in all that time, which is probably one of the reasons it remains very popular and like today, really busy.
We managed to get the last table in restaurant, a table for six, on the proviso that we would have to share if others came (which they did before we even ordered). Every time we're in Äkäslompolo we make at least one visit to Julli's so we didn't really have to look at the menu, we usually have a burger. Today was no exception, David had the usual "Burger with Antlers", a cheeseburger with reindeer meat on the top, and Maria had a Salmon burger served in a dark rye bun with a chilli shrimp mayo. The best bit about the burger meals is that they come with about half a kilo of shoestring fries. It's always a struggle to finish them but always good to try.
In the cabin, it was back to relaxing with the television and a bit of blogging, we're actually way behind publishing but our excuse at the moment is that we don't have Internet access.
We still had more continental cheeses left over from the other night, so we got them out for late evening snack to go with the remainder of our Christmas Glögi, the 21% ABV bottle. You need to be a bit careful how much of that you drink at one time...
