We are now in Ashland, Oregon, enjoying our second "rest day" of the vacation and our first day with sister, Wendy, before heading north tomorrow to Portland. Without wi-fi here and still no iPad update to the blogging app, it is down to Plan C for this update; here's hoping it gets no worse, as I have no Plan D.
Much of Friday was not spent travelling from Lake Tahoe to Sacremento, but gently hiking 9 miles to some smaller lakes in the Tahoe region. The intimate scale, compared with the 20 x 13 miles of Lake Tahoe itself, wove its own magic and the view down the valley over twin Echo Lakes was very special; lucky those who have holiday cabins there.
Family photos will form a kind of epilogue to the vacation blog, but it was great fun with Heather (niece) & Keith's family; Audrey is 5 bar a very few days, while Elise is a precocious 3. We had met them before, as we had droopy-eared basset hound, Abi, but it was good to say 'Hi' to the now teenage Kallisa, whom we missed last time around. Audrey had a soccer game on Saturday morning; the team came second, but it is encouraging to learn of an increasing interest in soccer at US schools. There is hope fior them yet, even if they are not stayers when it comes to golf!
We spent Saturday afternoon in "Old Sac", a few square blocks of Victorian buildings that someone had the sense to preserve, rather than demolish to make space for yet another skyscraper. And the unexpected icing on the cake for me was a celebration of 150 years history for the Union Pacific Railroad. Lots of rolling stock to take in and a wonderful presentation narrated by Abe Lincoln and featuring Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields, tghe Andrews Sisters and many other icons from the past.
And the unseasonable sunny, hot weather continues. America is being really kind to us.
